“I laid my double-barrel twelve-gauge shotgun on the bank next to me,” he recalled. Moments later, “the water exploded in front of me: a very large anaconda head shot out of the water and whizzed just inches from my face. I immediately went into a rage: this son-of-a-bitch of a snake was trying to kill me!” Chagnon began firing rounds into the snake, which violently twisted and turned as he reloaded, fired, and reloaded.  The Dangerous Life of an Anthropologist –

Comparative Media Studies 201: “Heterosexual Undertones in Top Gun”   Whether it is a glance, a throwaway line (“You always go home with the hot women”), or the scenes where Maverick has sex with a woman, there are subtle instances of straightness that are impossible to deny. It is unclear if director Tony Scott intended this reading, but too many clues exist for it to be purely coincidental. These details appropriately fly under the viewer’s radar, much as Maverick did to the MiG in the film’s opening dogfight.

The Stoic Emperor: “For a few centuries man has tried to make himself like a machine. He’s learned to arrive on time. He’s learned to repeat after teacher. He’s learned to do repetitious tasks reliably. Machines are now better at being machines than man is. Man must now relearn how to be man.”

Three Colours Beautiful: The Astonishing Early Colour Photography of Bernard F. Eilers   Bernard F. Eilers (1878-1951) had his own photographic business in Amsterdam, Holland. During the 1930s, business was poor. No-one wanted to hire a photographer or have a studio portrait taken. This lull in business caused by the Great Depression allowed Eilers to concentrate on developing a new process of colour photography. Over eighteen-months, Eilers tried and failed, tried and failed to devise his colour photographic technique.

The days of the drive-in movie theaters, 1930-1950   Though there were drive-ins as early as the 1910s, the first patented drive-in was opened on June 6, 1933 by Richard Hollingshead in New Jersey. It offered room for 400 vehicles. He created it as a solution for people unable to comfortably fit into smaller movie theater seats after creating a mini drive-in for his mother. Appealing to families, Hollingshead advertised his drive-in as a place where “The whole family is welcome, regardless of how noisy the children are.”

BEEN THERE, READ THAT: Newspaper Rock – Monticello, Utah   More recent carvings, beginning around 650 years ago, show men on horseback, some armed with bows and arrows. The relative age of the petroglyphs can be determined by the amount of desert varnish covering the figures, with the older designs typically being darker in color due to the repatination of surface minerals.

The big secret is that there are many secrets left to uncover. There are still many large white spaces on the map of human knowledge. You can go discover them. So do it. Get out there and fill in the blank spaces. Every single moment is a possibility to go to these new places and explore them. — Peter Thiel’s Religion

$3G ‘Jesus Shoes’ filled with holy water sell out within minutes |   Brooklyn-based creative label MSCHF is responsible for releasing the shoe, which is a pair of all-white Nike Air Max 97s — though the design is in no way affiliated with Nike — that have been injected with holy water sourced from the Jordan River. The water, which is visible in the see-through sole, has some coloring added to enhance visibility.

Pumpkin Spice: Now For Men –   You’re a man. You’re into man stuff, like weed whackers, sports that cause brain damage and getting hired by your dad’s golf friends. But it’s autumn. And something feels different. With each falling leaf, you feel a strange desire building in the area beneath your left pectorals. You think lady-people sometimes call this area the “heart.” You long for flavor infused with cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and — could it be — allspice?

The link to Quillette’s The Dangerous Life of an Anthropologist brought back memories of my anthropology professor, John Goggin, at University of Florida back in 1958. Yes he shared some adventure stories from the keys also everglades in Florida and the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, which he downplayed, but mainly he was a careful chronicler of the world as his observed it.

Of course as I was a youth back then, I do remember he passed out peyote buttons to the class and gave me and a friend who helped him move in to his new house, some more.
