  • Jewel August 3, 2018, 4:53 PM

Don’t know why but I was rooting for her.

  • Vanderleun August 3, 2018, 5:13 PM

Me too. I know what you mean.

  • Rick August 3, 2018, 5:35 PM

Were the cops really going to shoot her for stealing their car?

45 years seems a bit harsh to me. I guess the rule is don’t embarrass the cops.

  • Jewel August 3, 2018, 6:23 PM

I figured it out. It was the manful calmness she showed while taking advantage of the slothful chubchubs chasing her.

  • Snakepit Kansas August 3, 2018, 6:47 PM

Cops deal with trash all day long, and here is a typical example. Maybe I’m going against the grain, but I have no sympathy for her self-made plight. Try that in Singapore and she would get caned.

  • Rob De Witt August 3, 2018, 7:35 PM

I’m with you, Snake. Try that in the ’30s and the Rangers woulda shot her.

Nobody has to live her life according to her upbringing, believe me. She’s crazy because she wants to be, and so far it’s worked out just fine.

  • ghostsniper August 4, 2018, 4:14 AM

What’s with all these cops any more that act like they’re holding guns that are too big for them?
Like the gun itself is in charge and they, the cops, are just going along for the ride.
Maybe all of them should be using Raven .25’s.
Perhaps this is the foundation for Professor John Lott’s assertion that you are 13 times more likely to be shot by a cop than a criminal. Like putting a S&W 500 in a child’s hands and expecting a good outcome.

  • TN Tuxedo August 4, 2018, 5:24 AM

If you’re gonna steal a car and try to get away with it, don’t steal one that looks like a cop car. They look for that sort of thing.

  • Sid Vicious August 4, 2018, 6:15 AM

45 years? Really? So we’re talking incarceration costs of at least a million dollars. This is so incredibly stupid.

  • ghostsniper August 4, 2018, 7:17 AM

Well, what was the original charge that started the whole thing?
    Was it a “victimless” crime?
If so, then everything after that is bullshit.

  • Doug August 4, 2018, 7:41 AM

Sid, LE must have convinced the judge that she’s good for another 45 years…as their sex slave.

  • Vanderleun August 4, 2018, 8:32 AM

“On the first count, Sponsler’s initial charge of evading arrest, she received eight years in prison. For the second charge, unauthorized use of a vehicle, she received 10 years in prison. Count three, escaping custody, landed her 25 years in prison. For counts four and five, the evading arrest with vehicle and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon respectively, both landed her 45 years in prison. These sentences will run concurrently.”

Good article: accurate summary of both prosecution and defense, and answers many of the questions and objections raised above. http://lufkindailynews.com/news/community/article_c2514758-2268-11e8-bab1-07c9919ac071.html

IMHO this is a good starting point for discussions about left-v-right on crime, punishment, and the role of the state to society. But then I see many news stories as good jumping-off places for that. Texas is a great place in many ways, but as this shows there’s also downsides as well.

  • John A. Fleming August 4, 2018, 9:58 AM

There comes a point of inevitability in every revolution, when the prisons are stormed and those within are returned to Hobbes’ nature. The prisons have become a burning symbol of the despised tyrant. At that point, the great lords and ladies, judges and cops, suddenly realize it would be better to be a lowly taxi driver in some other *hole country and flee, lest the rough people’s justice be done upon themselves.

When a crazy-eyed chick gets 45 for tweaking the cops and showing up their bad arrestmanship …
    Are we there yet?

  • Terry August 4, 2018, 10:38 AM

@ John A. Fleming Yes. You are correct in my vision. The French Revolution is due for a re-run in the once great US of A. The brutality and cowardliness of the police is totally over the top. I believe they will pay a ghastly price in the coming leveling. Out numbered and out brained by some very tough customers indeed. Judges will be prime targets as well I would think. The “Have rope will travel” gangs will be very busy.

According to the link provided by subpatre above, this woman Toscha Fay Sponsler, 33, has a history of law problems, but how can you tell precisely?

    From the link:
“…in which she ran from Lufkin officers under suspicions of theft…”
Notice, “suspicions” of theft. WTF is that? Either she did or she didn’t.

Then, “…evading arrest with prior convictions…”
    More erroneous convictions?

    And, “…Sponsler’s prior convictions (for)….burglary of habitation…”.

There ya go. She was convicted of (assuming) the burglary of at least one house.
In light of the history of this retarded fiasco you have to wonder if that conviction is equally retarded.

    Your legal system at work.

Black’s Law Dictionary states the primary function of justice in the US is to “make the victim whole”, so who was the victim in this thing and were they made whole by this Keystone Kops scenario?
A dollar to a donut the answer is no.
The US justice system now is just another gov’t welfare make work effort and justice is not part of the equation.

  • pbird August 5, 2018, 8:15 AM

They sure didn’t do a very good job of immobilizing her did they?
She sure did a good job of making them look like boobs.
    Maybe ghost is right.

  • DJ August 5, 2018, 8:50 PM

45 years seems excessive. Cold blooded killers do half that.
