Rant of the Week (So Far): Waffle House Is Dirty?  WE ALREADY KNEW THAT!

“Waffle House is like eating a little bit of dirt when you’re a kid. Makes you strong. Builds up your immune system. You ever been in a Waffle House? The floor is always slidey. I’m not talkin’ about the kitchen floor. I’m talkin’ about the minute you walk in.”

Waffle House occupies a special place in American life. It is the last to shut down and first to open in a natural disaster. In fact, even FEMA relies on Waffle House to reveal whether the population has at least some access to food. It is magnificent in being a major employer of ex-convicts, people who have a hard time getting any job at all. It’s the first employment stop for many when they leave the pen.

Waffle House and Cracker Barrell, two national restaurant chains where you know the food is going to be consitently good and affordable.

I travel a lot for work, a lot of driving and I will pass up a lot of exits on the highway until I find either a Waffle House or a Cracker Barrell to get something to eat.

I’ve eaten there and the prices weren’t inexpensive, and it didn’t seem dirty.

FWIW, all the wafflehouses in the US look the same and there are either righthand or lefthand versions.

Except for one, and it is on Fort Myers Beach Florida and it looks like no other WH.

It looks like a beach cottage and I designed it, back in 1998. Because it is within sight of the Gulf it had to be waterproof to a height of 10′ above sea level which meant all exterior glass had to have *Sea World* specifications. And the entire structure had to withstand wind velocities of 160 mph. And it was not allowed to be scrubbed away from a tidal surge. The standard WH won’t do that. It will blow apart like a house of cards in a wind tunnel.

    So what did WH do?

Why, they hired the professional, of course.

I have to say that like Mike G my wife and i always look for a waffle house while we are on the road traveling. Found our share of them with slippery floors but have never had a bad experience there. And they do bring too many plates to the tiny tables, but they are the best.

Me too. Nothing but good experience with Waffle House over many years. Any restaurant can flunk a single health inspection if a stray roach sneaks in from outdoors at the wrong timer, or a new-soon-to-be-fired employee mucks something up just when the inspector arrives. Take at look at a restaurant’s long-term track record if you’re interested in that kind of stuff. We have a couple of Chinese restaurateur families here that keep moving around and changing the names of their places, and haven’t passed a health inspection yet that I know of.

WH Cook Colorado Springs 1979 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM shift. Nuff said. OK, I could tell a whole bunch of stories – mostly employees and clientele. We kept it clean, though.
