Midnight in the Labyrinth of Good and Evil

A pretty accurate diagnosis of the state of the American left today, not to mention some of the “Never Trump” right: Ataques de nervios are culture-bound psychological phenomena during which the individual, most often female, displays dramatic outpouring of negative emotions, bodily gestures, occasional falling to the ground, and fainting, often in response to receiving disturbing news or witnessing or participating in an upsetting event. Historically, this condition has been associated with hysteria and more recently in the scientific literature with post-traumatic stress and panic attacks. The woke world is a world of snitches, informants, rats. Go to any space concerned with social justice and what will you find? Endless surveillance. Everybody is to be judged. Everyone is under suspicion. Everything you say is to be scoured, picked over, analyzed for any possible offense. Everyone’s a detective in the Division of Problematics, and they walk the beat 24/7. You search and search for someone Bad doing Bad Things, finding ways to indict writers and artists and ordinary people for something, anything. That movie that got popular? Give me a few hours and 800 words. I’ll get you your indictments. That’s what liberalism is, now — the search for baddies doing bad things, like little offense archaeologists, digging deeper and deeper to find out who’s Good and who’s Bad. I wonder why people run away from establishment progressivism in droves. – – Planet of Cops – Freddie deBoer

Books are a curse. We’d all love to have a library with shelves stretching up to heaven, a ladder on rollers that lets you access the 17th level, where you keep the minor Polish poets and the monographs on eighth-century Chinese mandarins. But you end up with boxes of books in the basement, and you cannot part with them. Simply throwing them away feels sinful — hey, why not build a time machine and go back to Nazi-land and burn them, dude? You could sell them, but there’s something depressing about getting $7 for 70 pounds of paperbacks. It’s like auctioning your kid’s baby pictures on eBay and getting a high bid of a buck-fifty. The last time I divested my excess books I dumped them off on a Goodwill dock in the middle of the night, and I felt like someone pushing the family dog out of the car on a country road. The books will find a good home. I’m sure there’s a farmer around here they can live with. QotD: Confessions of a book-hoarder ォ Quotulatiousness

“They have set about writing out the Muslim antagonists from the stories about Muslim terrorism. Here we are a year after the event and they are blaming guns. In another year, the killer will be a white guy. This is why it is a fool’s errand to assign logical motives to Progressives. The goofy white woman holding the sign that reads “We Will Not Let Hate Win” in the Post story has no idea why she is there or even what she is saying with that sign. It is not even about a normal emotion like anger or sadness. People attending public memorial services for strangers can at least claim to feel bad for their community or humanity. That woman is there hoping to gain attention from the media so she can gain status among her coreligionists. That’s the thing about this new religion. It is feminine. Their “war on hate” is more like a popular new diet craze or a fashion trend. The gals get into it because the popular gals are into it. Everyone gets into it more and more, until everyone is doing it to the fullest and it suddenly stops being popular. Some new thing is the new thing and the cool girls are into that and not the old thing. Today’s war on extremism is just the yoga pants craze, but for emotionally unstable single women. It gives them a way to gain attention.” Source: The Irrationality Of It All | The Z Blog

Morning Chorus: Pyongyang’s 6 am wake up call   While North Korean music owes a great deal to the legacy of Korean folk music, it bears the heavy imprint of the first two Kim’s tastes. Where the father had a preference for martial songs harking back to the anti-colonial struggle against the Japanese, the son mixed a taste for grand opera with a predilection for electronic ballads. All three sensibilities merged in ‘Where Are You, Dear General?’, a piece allegedly written by Kim Jong Il for the North Korean opera “A True Daughter of the Party.” It is this song, covered by the Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble, that Fahey heard being broadcast from the clock tower.

Why did New Orleans lose out to the other big cities in the South, like Houston, Atlanta, Miami and Dallas, when it used to be “Queen of the South”? Since the percentage of those in poverty continues to increase and the same politicians are kept in office by the poverty vote, it becomes an endless cycle of increasing taxes and fees on the productive, who have left en mass to surrounding areas like Metairie and the North Shore towns of Covington and Mandeville and Slidell, where diversification of their economies is strong and education is first rate and the people live better lives than the remnant population of New Orleans. The trend to lower the quality of New Orleans continues, as drugs and crime is beginning to affect the one trick pony of the remaining economy, tourism, that still sputters along. Unfortunately, once the number of injured and murdered tourists becomes unbearable, even that small flicker of life will kill what is left of New Orleans, when that industry folds.

How many leftist lives that are wasted envying what others have instead of saying, “WOW! I’m driving a car ACROSS THE ENTIRE COUNTRY at 80MPH to see the GRAND CANYON while eating food conveniently located EVERY 20 MILES at gas stations!”? How many leftists are pissed because the government won’t pay for their birth control, instead of focusing on the fact that affordable birth control exists? How many leftists live angry, hate-filled lives because somebody has a 10 bedroom, 4 bathroom McMansion, ignoring the fact their modest 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom house will more than adequately house them for the rest of their lives? Re: Planet of Cops. Not to exonerate snitches, but how can anyone take seriously a blog post that quotes that consummate degenerate, William Burroughs, on social conservatism and church ladies? Muh freedom, I guess. And people wonder how we got from there to here and why we stay stuck on stupid.

Book hoarding: Once, quite a few years ago, I pulled 20-30 paperback books from a dumpster. They looked like some sort of book club printing. Titles like Out Of Africa, High Wind In Jamaica, The Power and the Glory and True Grit, in somewhat better quality paper and binding. In that same time period I salvaged from discard a number of fairly old books such as Boots and Saddles by Elizabeth Custer and Captain Bonneville by G. W. Irving. Still have ’em, still love ’em. I still buy a lot of my books at used book sales. They look and read pretty much the same…. SG

I had an install in Orlando in the mid 90s and me & my crew decided we’d take a couple days off on the way back and spend them in New Orleans. We parked about 2 blocks from the French Quarter and started walking. Within 2 minutes a black man was running like mad down the sidewalk with several policemen chasing him. Several more cut him off, grabbed him and proceeded to beat the crap out of this guy, right there on the sidewalk in front everyone.

Well we were definitely taken aback but continued. We were then accosted several streets up by a gang of drunks. We thought we should get off the streets and ducked into a decent looking steak place. Here we were immediately approached by some verrry aggressive hookers(I mean verrrrry) which we finally managed to get past. Then the meal here was borderline garbage.

We all had this look like WTF are we doing here? Walked back to the van and just motored on back to CO. That was over 20 years ago and you’re telling me that tourism is NO’s last leg of the stool? Good grief.
