The Abiding Evil of the “Don’t Be Evil” Monopoly

“Chinese authorities have announced plans to create a national reputation index. Under the scheme everyone will receive a virtue score based on observable behavior. “The Chinese government has announced a new universal reputation score, tied to every person in the country’s nation ID number and based on such factors as political compliance, hobbies, shopping, and whether you play videogames.”

the program will be administered by Alibaba (China’s answer to Amazon) and Tencent (the country’s huge, government-compliant social network). Your score will be generated not only by your activities, but by the activities of the friends in your social graph — the people you identify as friends on social media. Your score will be decremented for doing things like mentioning Tienanmen Square or speculating on official corruption, or for participating in activities that the state wishes to “nudge” you away from, like playing video-games….

“There is already a similar Western system of shame and virtue rating. It is called Political Correctness and uses boycotts, doxing and ridicule etc to punish those with low ratings, and reward high scorers with talk show interviews, book contracts and such….

“Forbes reported “at least 10 students accepted to Harvard have had their offers rescinded after administrators discovered offensive posts in a private, online Facebook messaging group, the Harvard Crimson reported Sunday. ” Google fired an engineer who disagreed with its diversity policies. Today you can lose your job, diploma or cake if you don’t have enough points. That your reputation is in the custody of Facebook not Alibaba may be a distinction without a difference.

I’ve long thought that the main problem with a corporate motto like “Don’t Be Evil” is that it sets the bar too low. “Don’t Be Evil” is well shy of “Be Good,” and not even within hailing distance of “Be Great.”

What if you refuse to participate?

In China you’re probably screwed. Here in the U.S. we can tell them to fuck off, but it may be just a matter of time before your credit rating reflects your PC score, at which point burning your credit cards will be the proper response. I’d predict an upswing in the market for ballistic computers and spotting scopes.

When do these people find the time to get any actual work done??
The Stasi were a more benevolent org than Google.

James Damore is a courageous man. The unhinged reaction of the Googlyites proves his memo was spot on.

PC fascist elite. I like that; has a ring to it. Almost sounds like a punk band name from the late Eighties.

Of course Google is evil. Patrick got it right in his comment above. I was personally struck by the book cover about Google, where the hardbound book cover wrapped Google around and had you seeing “Go,” and half of the “o,” as if to suggest the subject were God. Google is God. Big “G,” too.

For those who might be wondering, this is the greatest abomination you can accomplish.

And speaking of shit lists, I just read David’s blog post linked here.

You’ll be on a lot of shit lists in your lifetime, rest assured of that. Am I on Google’s? You bet. Obama was keeping shit lists galore. He had your neighbors shit listing you directly to the White House, if you’ll recall.

So, it’s not the being on one that matters. It’s which ones.

“…credit rating reflects your PC score…”
    ============================

What strangers at a distance claim about me has nothing to do with the people I deal with day to day and it’s been this way for the past 10 years at least.

I don’t do *credit* and am very regretful that I ever did.
It’s one of the biggest scams ever perpetuated and the source of unimaginable grief.

Call me an ignoramus, but I didn’t know “don’t be evil” was Google’s slogan.
    Good fucking Christ!
    What is “Evil”?
In the Judeo-Christian tradition (the foundational religious and ethical system of the world in which Google primarily operates) Evil entered the world through the Tree Of The Knowledge Of Good And Evil. “The LORD God commanded the man, saying, ‘From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil you shall not eat…’ (Genesis 2:17) In other words, knowledge itself is the Evil of Evils.
Man was a child, innocent, trusting, dependent upon God, until he took it upon himself to “know”. Knowing, understanding, choosing, exercising volition – these things alienated him from the Almighty and caused him to be banished from the Kingdom of God, losing the comforts and ease that he enjoyed in The Garden and compelling him to “eat his bread in the sweat of his brow”. This, apparently, is how Google sees itself and its relationship with its employees.
Do you say that I sound like some kind of religious nut? Well, the progressives who operate Google chose the word “evil”, not I.

  • Sam L. August 9, 2017, 9:34 AM

The “Don’t” is being erased from “Don’t Be Evil”. Only the bottom of the t remains, for now.

Thank you Denny and Nori for your concern. Fortunately, the BBB (h/t Nori) only ate my brain. Thanks to them I am permanently clear-headed and more easily able to use my mind. Having an insy navel I rarely lack for a lint covered hiding place for my mind. That’s why I shower so infrequently. I thought you’d want to know.
For safety’s sake I now sleep, hanging upside down, in my medicine cabinet next to a bottle of Oil of Oregano.
