The Myth of the Werehyena and the Fear of the Other in the Horn of Africa

The Sorceress by Jan van de Velde II (1626)

“What evils Desire commands, in the small secluded place; who, by sweet incantation, overcomes the minds of the purest mortals, induces frenzy in everyone! But how quickly it slips by; Death overtakes brief life, brief delights. Laughing for a moment, in eternity suffering regret.”

In West Africa, the Adze Is an Insectoid Source of Misfortune

Trick-Or-Treating for the Secret Truths About Candy The source for the namesake (not an ingredient) of Snickers candy bars was the beloved horse of creator Frank Mars, whose steed was named Snickers. Sadly, his equine bud passed away before the bar’s release in the 1930s. Lollipops, too, invented in the early 1900s, got their name from a famous racehorse at the time: Lolly Pop!

A (good-natured, not macabre) Halloween song for Miss Olive: The “Black Cat Song” by Tony Lee, another cat-loving Aussie:

Another nice thing about living in the woods is the 400 foot walk down the heavily wooded driveway is a deterrent to the trick or treaters – haven’t had any in the 14 years we’ve been here. But my wife always gets a big bag of the Hershey’s miniatures anyway “just in case” then by about 9pm her and me tear into it.

Kids in Flatlandia USA are sugared up and running around after two days of treats.

Friday the 30th the subdivision we live in hosted a “Trunk or Treat” at the community pool building and handed out candy while holding a community pot luck, COVID-19 be damned.

Yesterday was Halloween 👻 and people basically had a block party. The guideline was put a table up on your driveway or patio and place the treats on it for the children to take. My Lovely 😊 Mrs. and I sat on our patio drinking beer, snacking on salami, crackers, cheese, and pretzels, and talked with the neighbors as they stopped by with their children. People put out fire pits on their driveways and sat around the fire drinking and talking to each other. I think people are just about done with the Wu-Flu nonsense.

Best costume of the night? One little boy (we’d estimate 3 years old) wanted to be a vacuum cleaner. So his mother and father made him a vacuum cleaner costume, and he was happy. Runner up? The boy that went as the headless horseman, complete with bloody stump for a neck.

Oh, and we had a minivan pull up on the street alongside our house, open the lift gate, and a half dozen trick or treaters scrambled out like Marines from a landing craft.

Final tally? 115 children from 5 to 8 PM yesterday. Good thing the weather was in the 50s as today, as it’s plunged to the 30s and is windy today.

Happy November all. Get out and vote.

Arrgh! I meant to say Halloween was in the 50s yesterday. Were Halloween today, the little kids would be freezing 🥶 in the 30s.

Meanwhile up here atop the world, my savage teen granddaughter, dressed and painted as something out of Steam Powered Giraffe (You don’t know SP Giraffe? Shucky darn you must be almost as old as I am!), dressed and painted as somewhere twix Spline and Rabbit (Who started out as identical twins but Rabbit, going at great lengths not to be #2 twin trannied.) spent all Hallows Eve with her four and a half closest friends steppin’ and stylin’ ’round the skirts of Fairbanks not treating (which is, of course forbidden, if it saves the life of one geriatric democrat voter [unless they early voted thrice already, of course], it’s all worth it!) but maybe tricking (You must admit, a gray area, when does a trick become a protest and hence COVID safe?), & a ghoul time was had by all!
