“The characteristic of the hour is that the commonplace mind,

knowing itself to be commonplace, has the assurance to proclaim the rights of the commonplace and to impose them wherever it will.
As they say in the United States: “to be different is to be indecent.” The mass crushes beneath it everything that is different, everything that is excellent, individual, qualified and select. Anybody who is not like everybody, who does not think like everybody, runs the risk of being eliminated.” - - 3 Bits Of Wisdom From The Philosophy Of José Ortega y Gasset

Your Say

You can be successful, get rich, produce art, make fine things, get girls, or whatever floats your boat just by working hard and being extraordinary in a few ways. Nobody needs to be "different" to succeed, unless you define success as being persecuted. Those who decry "different" people being stomped on, put down, pulverized or whatever are just looking for sympathy, for themselves.

Who says that? I've never heard anyone say that and I've been here 68 years. Sounds like bull.

Who said it you ask. Well the Hispanic said it. So it must be true. The real truth is, Americans are the most individualistic people on the planet. The Conservative version, that is. The Leftist version is who this writer may be referring to.

pbird: José Ortega y Gasset, The Revolt of the Masses, circa 1932. Here 68 years and can't check a source. If you were still a kid, I'd send you to your room. Yes, I'm old enough to be your father.

I can check a source, but am dubious of the value of the opinion of some Spaniard when the subject is Americans.
