I knew the answer in 1964 but I forgot it by 1965

How does LSD induce short-term psychosis but long-term optimism? |
Shortly after taking the drug, participants who received LSD reported an increase in psychosis-like symptoms, including visual hallucinations, spiritual experiences and paranoia. It was an outcome the researchers had expected. But interestingly, those given LSD were more likely to feel positive, and even ‘blissful’ emotions, as opposed to the negative and ‘anxious’ feelings sometimes associated with psychedelic drugs. What was even more striking was that two weeks after taking LSD, these individuals reported increased optimism and openness, making them more creative and curious, as compared to those who received the placebo.

Your Say

The first 10 or 12 times I dropped acid ('69) it was obviously pharmaceutical stock- hard shiny pills just like the doctor gives you. It was clean, very visual, and an all around wonderful experience. The bootleg stuff that followed was high anxiety, very limited visuals, and much less fun. I am still fascinated with hallucinogens. I did some reading on this recently, and the word in the underground indicates there is no true LSD left. The trips on the ersatz substitutes run 12 hours or more, and the stuff will kill you if you take too much. Mushrooms are around here and there. Did some this last summer as a matter of fact. But the shroom is a white knuckle ride, and it's almost impossible to avoid those "I want this to stop" moments. Of all the hallucinogens, peyote is far and away the best, once you get past the barfing. But peyote is all but impossible to find.

I avoided drugs with the exception of weed usage for about 3 months in 1970. Didn't like it and never repeated the use. So I have no firsthand knowledge of LSD.

Two 'friends' I knew did the stuff and they became sort of screwed up; on second reflection though they were rather goofed before the usage so whether the drug did bend them or not is open to debate.

since I didn't associate with people in that culture, I haven't much info to judge whether data is true or false.
