What makes a memorable image? Q&A with Stuart Franklin of Magnum

The most memorable of your photographs is the Tiananmen Square picture Tank Man (1989). Is that frustrating, that this one has become the most memorable from your work?....
Tiananmen Square is much the same in that, yes, it tells the story of a man in front of a tank. It became important because of television coverage. I think it was on 5 June 1989. It was seen by George Bush Snr, when he was in Kennebunkport in Maine, and he said: ‘Seeing the tank driver exercise restraint, I’m convinced that the forces of democracy are going to overcome these unfortunate events in Tiananmen Square.’ | Aeon Essays

Your Say

George B. Senior. Another "Fortunate Son". Saved by a submarine. And the Amerikan people were therefore robbed blind.

>>‘Seeing the tank driver exercise restraint, I’m convinced that the forces of democracy are going to overcome these unfortunate events in Tiananmen Square.’

But the forces of democracy fuckin didn't, did they? They rolled out the steel-wheeled machine guns as always....

There was no "Tank Man" 25 year retrospective. No VH-1 Tank-man "Where are They Now?" That guy was tortured to death and used for medical experiments. Maybe you can see Tank-man at one of those plasticized bodies exhibits in the US. That's how the Chinese roll...

Dumbass Bushes always convinced the forces of democracy are going to overcome unfortunate events in (fill in the blank). It's magical thinking. It's the WASP Republican negative image of the Leftist "arc of history".

Goddamned Idiots. Look what they've done...
