"Black box recorders from doomed Egyptair flight are so severely damaged they will take 'lots of time and effort' to fix before they reveal what caused it to crash

What Would It Take To Destroy A Black Box?
"It is extremely rare for a black box to be destroyed," says Hamilton. "Black boxes have traditionally outperformed their design." Hamilton says he cannot think of a single case in which both devices have been damaged to the point of there being no useful data. "It would take a concentrated fire beyond its design strength, or an impact so high that it would be beyond what it could withstand."

That or a country like Egypt pulling heavily on the strings of "Hide it! Hide it!" to keep their tourist industry on life support and their Muslims beyond reproach.

For those who do not understand Gerard's comment, see http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2001/11/the-crash-of-egyptair-990/302332/

There is NO WAY I would fly on a state airline from a Muslim-majority country. No damn way. Some may call that Islamophobia, but I call it common sense.

Langewiesche is a great writer. Also check out (unrelated) http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2003/11/columbias-last-flight/304204/
