The ancients, even the prehistoric ancients, didn't know less than we do, they knew different things.

What has been lost is equal to what has been gained, how can it be otherwise? Or shall we also believe their days were less bright and their rain less wet, their lives less alive and their dead more dead? There never were simpler times. Ancient societies were no less convoluted, nor their protocols any less inviolable. Woodpile Report
