"What am I in the eyes of most people – a nonentity, an eccentric or an unpleasant person

– somebody who has no position in society and never will have, in short, the lowest of the low. All right, then – even if that were absolutely true, then I should one day like to show by my work what such an eccentric, such a nobody, has in his heart.... " - - Van Gogh on his life'€™s mission

Your Say

If you saw Vincent approaching you on the street, you's cross over to avoid meeting him. He was a veritable train wreck and an oddball.

Why, then, is he universally loved today, both by art aficionados, and unwashed laymen?

Because I don't have to meet him on the street.

For the same reason picasso is held in high regard.
Or Whore Hole, or that ho that painted cow head-flower-vaj's.

Still looking for the answer. You low lifes are funny, but not much fun at a cocktail party.

Oh, sorry. Go back to your Gainsborough and Thomas Kinkade in magazines. The rest of us will keep talking. ahem.

VVG is possibly the most beloved artist in history, at this particular moment. His work looks like a grade schooler did it (at first glance). I have seen several of his paintings in person, in NYC, DC, Seattle and in Russia. In an environment of high end art, his work seizes you by the eyes and demands attention.

Why?

Yes of course, popularity automatically makes one good at their art.
silly me....

I still don't care to look at his stuff much, it just doesn't do anything for me and can be consumed in a single glance, easily, by people that know what they're looking at.

Seems the planet is flooded with that sort of thing now and one must really dig to find anything worth appreciating.
