I had an idyllic childhood. My childhood was so normal that in the new America, I’m a freak.

Two parents (of differing sexes, a necessary clarification these days),
a nice house in the suburbs, a stay-at-home mom, a hard-working father with a stable, nonpolitical job. A yard, a friendly dog, home-cooked meals, and a kitchen always bursting with food. A family that would get me through anything—if there was anything to get through. There’s no trauma in my past. No abuse. No bullying at school. No diseases. No racial slurs around the dinner table.
