Pocket Notebooks: A Brief History

field-notes.jpg

No camper, be he hunter, fisherman, scout, naturalist, explorer, prospector, soldier or lumberman, should go into the woods without a notebook and hard lead pencil.
Remember that notes made with a hard pencil will last longer than those made with ink, and be readable as long as the paper lasts. Every scientist and every surveyor knows this and it is only tenderfeet, who use a soft pencil and fountain pen for making field notes, because an upset canoe will blur all ink marks. | The Art of Manliness

Your Say

In my younger years (pre-70) I did a fair amount of camping, hiking and fishing, alone and with family. Can't recall ever having a pencil or notebook on me, or a camera for that matter. I was there for the moment. No interest in recording for posterity.

Was in 2 different "tactical" stores last week and saw the same waterproof notebook display in each.

It was a galvanized bucket full of water with a waterproof notebook above, under a stream of constantly running water. ~clever~

The display was so captivating I neglected to see who the manufacturer was.

I believe it was this one:

Camping? Today's Millennials explore the hinterlands via Google or the Travel Channel. For some added spice, they may tune in Nat Geo for their doae of Earth at it's end.
