The Russians will kill everything that moves in eastern Syria, for example, in order to subdue ISIS.
From an American perspective, handing the Middle East over to the Russians is not a terrible thing. Americans are far too moralistic to run a proper empire. To the contrary, I think they'll broker a peace deal between Syria, Isis, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Israel, Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Kurds, and there will be a millennium of peace in the ME. /sarc (for the not-quite-awake crowd)

The Ruskies are just using the place for a proving ground for new equipment and live fire exercises to put some steel in their forces before the push into western Europe.
