The holes in doughnuts were first noted in print in 1861,

when it was used to describe how little a person consumed: “Her brother James, who never talked anything but nonsense when he could help it, declared she ate nothing but the hole of a doughnut.” Dollars to Doughnuts

Your Say

OK, I get it. This is a Zen exercise, right?

If the doughnut was out in the forest and nobody saw it, would it still have a hole?

The hole is nothing without the doughnut.

An optimist sees the doughnut, a pessimist sees the hole. Most of us will dispense with the metaphysics and eat the thing.
