I tried to read the book once. A long time ago. I am not sure I finished the first chapter. It was unreadable glub.

Grass was Nazi as a young man. He repented for it by becoming a Stalinist, although he did not have the guts to go live in the Worker's Paradise of East Germany.

He was a repellant human being. Fortunately he was mortal. I assume that his books will be completely forgotten in a couple of generations, as will most of the 'modern" crap published since WWI.
