The basalt principle of current American governance is that you can fool enough of the people enough of the time.

The smart can safely be ignored.
People with capacious and well-stocked mental larders are statistically insignificant. Thus candidates campaign by grinning and smirking, hiding whatever intelligence they may have, and professing sympathy for orphans and the downtrodden. In France, a candidate with the mind of a lawn chair would be held in contempt, but in America he is thought to be of the people, and authentic. Unfortunately, he is. Fred On Everything

Your Say

The French would do better to hold themselves in contempt.

One doesn't have to fool the younger crowd. They aren't paying a bit of attention. when a lightening bolt lights up the sky and the thunder rolls, they move en mass to whatever Jon Stewart said.

Politically (and in other venues) Americans are the dumbest fools on the planet. If a politician smiles, speaks nice words, talks in a pleasant manner, voter will say "John xxxxxxx is doing a good job". Fk'ing morons.

I reminded Fred that when I suggested a voting age of 25, he countered with "35," so I had to remind him again.

Also reminded him that the last time a majority of 25-year-old Americans were full-fledged adults was when Eisenhower was President. It's a good piece by Fred, all-in-all.

I think that the best change for voter qualification would be that the prospective voter must present a cashed cheque proving that they had paid income taxes for the previous year. No skin in the game? Then you don't qualify to vote.
