The Turtleneck Comes Back Out of Its Shell

MC1-1024x797.jpg
Thanks to our obsession with these black-and-white photos from fifty years ago when “all men dressed well” (or at least enough that we can comfortably fool ourselves into actually believing that platitude), the McQueen/Caine style of turtleneck, best worn under a sportcoat or paired with wool trousers, is now prevalent once again. -- A Continuous Lean.

I hate turtlenecks. I have always hated turtlenecks.

My mother thought that I should wear turtlenecks. Every year, she would buy me a turtleneck.

Every year she would ask me if ever wore the turtleneck she had given me. Every year I would tell her that I hated turtlenecks, and that I would not wear it. That never stopped her from giving me a turtleneck the next year.

She is gone now. Died in 2010 at age 87. One thing that I do not miss is those goddamned turtlenecks.

Do you know how many poor children there are in China that don't have a turtleneck? Or carrots, broccoli and okra.

Its not a bad look but I don't like how turtlenecks feel. I heard a comedian once (I think it was Mitch Hedburg?) note that they feel like a really weak midget is trying to strangle you all day long. They're fairly warm but they make my neck itch and feel constrictive.

But they look so freakin sexy, in black. Always black.
