By 2018, it is estimated there will be 112 million wearable devices such as smartwatches, keeping users connected it real time to their phones, emails, text messages and the Internet.
By 2020, there will be 152 million cars connected to the Internet and 100 million Internet-connected bulbs and lamps. By 2022, there will be 1.1 billion smart meters installed in homes, reporting real-time usage to utility companies and other interested parties. I'm skeptical the "smart watch" thing will in any way take off - people want the internet for things that a little bitty watch-sized monitor won't provide - but this is the biggest problem I have with the quote:

Where's all the money to pay for this going to come from? Where are the jobs, the earning, going to come from?

Don't kid yourself.
For 30 years I wanted a 23" monitor and now that I have one everyone is staring at 5" screens, defying logic.
When our new Florida home was built in 2002 it had a smart meter on it. No more meter dood traipsing through the yard, peering in windows, reporting to the Homeland.

One more thing. This *connected* business is gonna turn around. Eventually people will be paying good money to be left the hell alone. Just watch.
