Normalizing relations with Cuba will not,

as Sen. Marco Rubio passionately put it in these pages, grant the Castro regime “legitimacy.”

Nothing can grant it legitimacy. Fidel Castro ruined his country for a dead ideology and the whole world knows it. It may be closer to the truth to see the Castro brothers’ eagerness for normalization as an admission that they’ve run out their string. They’ve lost everything that kept them alive, from the Soviet Union to once-oil-rich Venezuela. The Castro government is stuck. Their economy is nothing. They have no strength. They enjoy vestigial respect from certain quarters, but only vestigial. They’ve lost and they know it.

La Noonan is a member of the Fair Play for Cuba Committee.

So keeping the same US policy for 50 years didn't do any good. Seems that 50 years of Castro rule hasn't done Cuba any good, either.

And then there's "no one else embargoes travel to or trade with Cuba." Lack of other embargoes, vacationing Canadians and Europeans should provide some pretty good hard currency to improve things there. But for some reason it's our embargo that keeps the Cubanos down, rather than the policies of the Castro dictatorship.

Just too much lefty cognitive dissonance there for me.

Noonan is again an idiot.

Raoul Castro now can keep being as oppressive and brutal as ever before, but with a better economy and more money to play with. This legitimizes him in the eyes of his people an the world.

Smart Diplomacy evidently means "give the worst enemies of the US what they want and get nothing from them."

Chris: we'll get something from them: plague, starving refugees, future Democrats, blight and burden.

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”

And if you don't we will come over and pick them up. No charge.

I am tired of fooling around, he said. As for the rights of anyone, tell your people they can go fuck themselves.
