That kind of stuff is not what motivates them. What motivates them is taking time to whet and facilite their intellectual curiosity when they are wee ones, and continuing in this vein until they leave home. We raised six of them, and their report cards and success in life (so far) validated this approach.

There is such a thing as going too far the other direction from sloth, though.

BillH: you are partly correct, in that East Asian culture respects and honors learning. But it is also true that these parents do indeed pressure their children to study hard.
