In the first Planet of the Apes, Charlton Heston, the ultimate white man,

a_a592charlton-heston.jpg

is thrown into a world where monkeys are the Man and he is reduced to the status of an angry black radical.
In Rod Serling’s screenplay, gorillas are the Irish cops, orangutans the conservative WASP ruling class, and chimpanzees the liberal Jewish intellectuals who are Heston’s only hope. Heston famously noticed: … an instinctive segregation on the set. Not only would the apes eat together, but the chimpanzees ate with the chimpanzees, the gorillas ate with the gorillas, the orangutans ate with the orangutans, and the humans would eat off by themselves. It was quite spooky.

Your Say

One thing I noticed even as a kid, was how the apes were stratified by they're whiteness. The orangutangs were the smartest, highest status and the whitest. Chimps, lower on the totem pole, and less white. The darkest were the gorillas and also the most violent and dumbest.

Too much monkey business. More fun than a barrel full of monkeys.

He doth like the ape that the higher he clymbes the more he shows his ars.

My uncle Letsgo Lozko raised bantam chickens and none of 'em were ever in a barrel.

"...even on the set..."
Well, Stanislavski's "method acting" (at an astonishing rate of "tuition" for "Hey!, Kids!, learn to act! Discover "the craft"!) and all that!

I'm pleased to admit that not once did I ever consider the possibility that Planet of the Apes was an allegory about race.

There are advantages to avoiding a university "education."
