Gerard: Interesting etymology. I didn't know that.
But, in a practical sense, the word now means what the public thinks it means. Just as for thousands of years "Nimrod" meant "mighty hunter", but now means "fool" because millions of American children saw Bugs Bunny mock Elmer Fudd without understanding the biblical reference. "Against stupidity the gods themselves contend in vain."

Ditto "gay" can no longer refer to a singular state of "happy". Ditto, "money", despite the left's bloodlust for ever more and more of it, is - in non-business mediaspeak - almost always just another progressive trigger-word for "evil". See also, the annual purging of vocabulary/burning of words from the OED.

Did you know that in the late 1800's "gay" was used to refer to promiscuity and prostitution?
