The Benefits of Flyover America

jack_herder.jpg

Funny (not really) how none of the migrants, immigrants, illegal aliens, shnooks, crooks, grifters and cons never ever move to small/medium towns in flyover country.
Out here where I live it is pretty clear: you don't work, you don't eat; you wanna dance you gotta pay the piper; you do the crime you do the time (or other punitive measure); you work harder than the next guy you get paid more. The list is long but simple. Probably even the childs not left behind could muddle through it. Advanced involvement will require interest in the local schools, churches, any fraternal organizations, bake sales, fund-raiser carwashes, being able to wave at people you actually know their names. Saluting the flag (if you have to ask which one you better go back to the beehive). I'm glad they don't come out here. -- chasmatic in New York loves an easy dollar

Your Say

Sorry, not completely accurate. Case in point: Frankfort, Indiana. It is now 25% Hispanic, with a median income $9,000 below the Indiana average. http://censusviewer.com/city/IN/Frankfort

Kat: thanks for taking interest in this article. I'm sure there are anomalies in what is intended as a general description of demographics and societal trends. East of the Mississippi River would have different conditions as would areas above or below the Mason-Dixon Line. I live in the Border Zone in NM and my town is 50% Hispanic. Of note is that these families are second and third generation citizens and they eschew the racial/ethnic divisions. They followed what this country has encouraged since its inception, which is a melting and merging with American ideals and no hyphens. They became citizens because they want to be here and they want to be Americans.

The "median income" stats can be misleading when quoted out of context. There are a whole lot of Americans of every color and ethnicity and age and whatever other signifier that is used that have incomes below the area average. Conclusions cannot be drawn on a single out of context number.

If you really want to make a point and back it up with numbers, have at it. Include crime stats, unemployment and welfare numbers, illiteracy and compare those numbers with similar stats for Blacks and Whites and Asians. I have made my point so I won't bother.

This is a nice blog site, eh? How do you like the rest of it?

I'm guessing Chas, you haven't been to the upper Midwest, either. I know towns in Iowa where the Catholic Church has to have a Spanish language mass these days. THAT was not the case in the past.

And Bosnians. "Hey, your grandfather was from Yugoslavia, go talk to the Bosnians."

"Ummm...that would not be a good idea. My grandfather was Croatian, and sent money to the Ustasi, if he wasn't full blown member."

And the Islamic Center. That wasn't there before, either.

I haven't seen a minority in over a month, maybe 2. Don't really recall, don't care. There aren't many around these parts, only 6 or so in the whole county, so they say. I got no use for em.

There is no doubt that the demographics are changing all over the States. Ethnic, racial, religious, age, sexual alignment, religion, the whole damn cheese. That is one strength of our country. The insularity is what hurts. Assimilation can be a good thing, depends on one's priorities I guess. You're correct, Eric, I haven't been all over this nation in the last twenty years so I don't see the changes. From what you say they're for the worse. I don't doubt it a bit. My statements are based on the region in which I live, which is Farm & Ranch country along the border in New Mexico.

I don't want to start drifting so far out that I lose sight of shore. I stand by my comments. No sense trying to generalize the whole situation.

"Out here where I live" is all I'm gonna talk about. y'all can debate among yourselves, flinging unqualified statistics and hearsay anecdotes. I repeat that I am glad the ne'r-do-wells and other social parasites don't come to my area. That's it, that's all.

Well Ghost, consider: That last sentiment cuts both ways.

Chas: Class warfare is what we got. But that also cuts both ways.

"We need more gun control in the city."

"Why are you trying to disarm all the black people?"

The cognitive dissonance is awesome to behold.

Where you live Eric? Tell us about your part of the country.

I did below in that piece about New York City.

OK, gotcha Eric. Different POVs account for different opinions, shrug.

This is where we say "not right, not wrong, just different".
