Your Say

In the 1969 Bluebonnet Bowl an Estes Model Saturn V was launched from the 50 yard line of the Astrodome. I was unable to find a video of it on the web but there is a story online about it from the NASA/Houston Rocket Club.

I once had a Saturn V rocket model on the transporter. I bought it at Cape Kennedy, at the gift store, back in - I think - 1978.

I also had a model lunar lander and Apollo command module from the same store. (I saved my money so that I could buy them.)

Wish I had them now and could build them again.

Some guys built a Saturn V scaled rocket and launched it.

Estes (and Centuri, to a lesser extent) got a lot of my limited funds when I was growing up. One of my uncles had a place with a lot of acreage and not many trees that served as a perfect launch and recovery area. The big, cluster-engined models like the Saturn 1B/V were the best. You had to be careful in how you wired the igniters in the engines to make sure they all lit simultaneously, but the results--a liftoff that was slow enough that you could see what was happening, a flight to a decent altitude, followed by the deployment of a couple of big chutes--made it worth the effort.

And now you need a FEDERAL HOBBYIST ROCKETEER LICENSE to indulge your passion.
Is this a great country or what?

Tired Dog, you forgot an EPA study on environmental impact, a permit by the Diversity panel to insure no racism, do not forget the ATF tax stamp, FAA clearance, Hazmat suits and Police protection. Have fun kids.

T-Tap, there were some rocket engines available in the 1970s that could have caused the FAA some concern. These were the Enerjet engines, and a properly-designed rocket using one (or more) for power could get up into the flight levels, or so the manufacturer's advisory read. I never used these, because they cost too much and I didn't have a launcher that could handle a really large and powerful rocket, but it would have been fun to try.
