Note the bullying nature of Putin.

He prefers scanning westward to slice off parts of Georgia, Ukraine,

and perhaps next the Baltic states rather than eastward to pick a border fight with, say, his neighbor China. He bets big-time that affluent and leisured Americans in the post-Iraq and -Afghanistan Age fear tough diplomacy as much as they do war, and thus skip the former in fear it might lead to the latter. Your Say

"...post-Iraq and -Afghanistan Age.."
Really? Well, for SOME well traveled international "appointed" department heads with a history of abbreviated terms of office, I guess.
Let's just throw Pakistan in for good measure.

I wish Putin had been born in Idaho. We need a strong leader, one that fights for the good of his country. Not so nasty as Putin, but I can't say that our poofter is doing any less damage than Vlad would.

We see surveys about how many people die from medical malpractice or drinking and driving, &c. I wonder how many people have died from governmental malpractice? How many deaths can we attribute to this ass clown in DC?

If Hanson thinks that Europe and the U.S. can 'squeeze' Russia, he probably should spend less time on geopolitics and more time looking at financial and economic news.

Lorne: yes, it's like the tail trying to wag the dog.

That's a good basic analysis of the American people, although I'm not sure he thinks it through that far. I think he's come to the conclusion that America won't do anything to stop anyone militarily. I doubt he's thought through to the next conclusion: that the American people fear diplomacy because it might lead to war. True, but I don't think Putin cares enough to even think that far.

America+Europe are better off and more stable financially than Russia, I suspect, but not by much.

Looks like Putin has a pretty free hand at least until 2016. I mean, who's gonna stop him?
