Mattress Scams

sealy-optimum-girl.jpg

Busting the mattress racket: They confuse us with silly product names
(the Sealy Posturepedic Crown Jewel Fletcher Ultra Plush Pillowtop or the Sealy Posturepedic Crown Jewel Brookmere Plush?). They flummox us with bogus science ("pocketed coils"? "Microtek foundations"? "Fiberlux"?). And they weigh us down with useless features (silk damask ticking?). It's like buying a used car, and almost as expensive -- I've seen mattresses going for $7,000. What's a consumer to do?

Your Say

Buy the ones without pecker tracks.

A really good mattress is worth a lot of money. That said, they way overcharge for mattresses because honestly, what are you gonna do?

We have a WalMart "Spa Sensations" memory foam mattress that cost around $350 and is heavenly. A couple of family members have bought one after testing ours out, and we have a second one on a guest bed. Maybe it won't last as long as a more expensive product -- we don't know yet -- but at that price, who cares?

A clear conscience makes a soft pillow.

Those memory foam pads are paradise, I couldn't do without one now.

Sealy invented the Microtek foundation, but I, at HWP-L&P in Georgetown, KY, was the engineer that made all the component parts (over 6000) assembled them and tested them. Honestly, it's a great foundation...but no foundation is worth that kind of money. Aside: it was the hardest year I ever worked in my life, and I got the smallest raise for it; learned a lesson.

Pillowtops? Total bullshit; the foam sets in three years. Damask ticking? Stupid women and metrosexuals go for that on the showroom floor...at home you cover it and dont see it again for ten years.

Coil count and wire gauge are the only things to consider. And dont get a "one-sided" either: flip and rotate every 12 months. Certainly pick out what's comfortable (and firm!) but dont be stupid.

Cheerio!

Family always purchased Stern's and Foster mattresses, expensive but always seemed worth it in the past. Buy good shoes and buy good mattresses, when you are not in one you are in the other. I purchased a mattress a few years ago, they told me I couldn't get one without a pillow top because they don't make them without a pillow top. It the most uncomfortable thing. Haven't had a good nights sleep in a long time.

Memory foam and pillow tops are for candy-ass pajama and coco boys.

Sam's Club and Costco. That's where I'll get my next mattress.

My brother has a $300-400 memory foam mattress from WalMart. Great mattress. I think it's 10 inches thick, IIRC.

Last time I had a decent night of sleep was on our 80% waveless waterbed and then 10 years ago my wife said, "No more.", and went and got a standard mattress and my sleep was destroyed.

I have a leather reclining chair (some Italian design my wife picked out; not a La-Z-Boy type) that's more comfortable than any mattress I've ever encountered. I sleep in it about as much as the bed.

I just ordered a queen, full foam, 10-inch thick mattress from Tuft & Needle for $500. Have not received it yet. This is the highest-rated mattress on Amazon, although my model is not sold there. I ordered on the Tuft & Needle web site.

Shipping is included, 30-day tryout period with return shipping included. This is a start-up, only 3 years or so old, whose founders intentionally are setting out to overthrow the established industry.

My wife and I presently have a $2,500 Serta full foam, 10-inch mattress, and wile it is the best I have ever had, it still leaves my back feeling like it was set in concrete overnight. Not sore, but very inflexible. So I am trying the T&N. My wife, God less her, could sleep on a mattress stuffed with broken glass.

Let me know how that turns out for you, Sensing. I might follow suit.

Mr. Barnett, thank you for the useful information.

I can set my cup of cocoa on my memory foam topper while relaxing in my flannel pj's!

Stop goofing around with that stuff. This Is The Best. And if it's not, switch around components until it is:
