I do not much blame the Left for hesitating to talk about Big Ideas.

The Left has been losing the Big Idea debate for a generation or more,
in no small part because its last Big Idea killed 100 million people, give or take, and not in Mr. Klein’s projecting-abstractly-from-a-CBO-study way but in the concentration-camps-and-hunger-terror way. Marxism was the Left’s Big Idea for the better part of a century, and its collapse — which was moral, economic, political, and complete — left a howling void in the Left’s intellectual universe. But they can do it better this time! They promise!

The people still advancing Leftism are undeterred by 100 million dead bodies. Keep this in mind as you try to convince one of them that some economic reality should make them question the religiously held views about Big Government.

The Right argues facts because it makes The Right feel more comfortable and less confrontational. The Left believes in Leftism despite history and The Right believes in facts despite their ineffectiveness on The Left.

Some of the commenters over at the article get their talking points not only at Stewart's, but also at SNL. They are the more widely-read I suppose.

The left doesn't worry about the Big Ideas - they are too busy dominating every cultural, social, economic and government system in the West.

When one of the NR clowns attempts to talk to a leftist about the Big Ideas, the leftist, with fire in its eye, uses a Politically Correct control word on the NR guy. Whereupon the NR guy ties himself in knots trying to defend himself and then slinks away, index cards trailing everywhere.

100 million? They were probably Republicans anyway.

The left hasn't had a new idea since 1964. Talk about being opposed to progress and being stuck in the past. And everything new that comes out they want to drag through the same old mud. Tax it, regulate it, control it!
