After decades of being effectively unopposed, Political Correctness is playing defense, but it has no experience with it.
The rising defiance to PC is causing genuine panic in their ranks. PC has been unconstrained by reality for decades, now it's far from sight of shore, held together by little more than cant and chants, its internal stresses incapable of withstanding any informed confrontation. To paraphrase a well known chuckle-head, "What difference, at this point, does it make?" The fellow travelers who have for decades infested the education, entertainment, and "news" industries are firmly in control and sure as hell are not going to relinquish their powers to create and control opinions and social mores. Moreover, even if it's true that "the folks" have begun to understand the vapidity of political correctness, so what? The discovery is too little and way too late. That particular cancer was detected much earlier and was allowed to metastasize. The country I grew up in and loved had a tremendous run and was a force for good throughout the world. The people who lived in that country allowed themselves to believe the venomous speech spewed by the ideologically driven enemies within. Finally, when a PC protagonist like Andrew Cuomo can deride an entire class of the electorate (conservatives) and get away with same, then you know a line of demarcation has been crossed. The governed are going to learn (once again!) that if we learn anything from history, it's that we learn nothing from history.

Speaking of PC speak here's a bit from an organization that intends to save Gaia:

It is a conference that has always been about hope and solutions to remediate and reverse unsustainable ways. It is a conference dealing with the current environmental, business and society realities of our country, and indeed, the world. Our attendees go home inspired by what they have seen and heard. Inspired by what is possible, if only we move ahead sustainably."
Sustainable is the PC buzzword used to enlist good-hearted people in the war against modernity. Whenever you hear it, push back - hard.

PC was invented to give an excuse for personal and institutional hypocrisy. As long as one held the Party line, your contradicting views and actions were correct.
