Is Maureen Dowd Obsolete? The Evidence Speaks, Loudly

Listen, Corn Flower. Let’s think over this business of obsolete men. Reflect.
You live in New York, in which every building was designed and built by men. You perhaps use the subway, designed, built, and maintained by men. You travel at in a car, invented, designed, and built by men—a vehicle that you don’t understand (what is a cam lobe?) and couldn’t maintain (have you ever changed a tire? Could you even find the tires?), and you do this on roads designed, built, and maintained by men. You fly in aircraft designed, built, and maintained by men, which you do not understand (what, Moon Pie, is a high-bypass turbofan?) == Fred On Everything

Your Say

Yeah, but some women are beautiful. And they trade their favors for all that stuff we created. It should also be noted that men didn't create all that stuff. Western men did. Mostly so we could have beautiful women.

glenn,

And that would be because men are saps. If the last 50 years have taught us anything, it's that you can have beautiful women without giving yourself away.

As W.C. Fields put it, "A beautiful woman is like an elephant. They're nice to look at, but I wouldn't want to own one."

It seems to me that every liberal that whines that automobiles are evil should be banned from every benefit of cars and trucks. Let them grow their own food and make their own clothes. They would be too busy to whine

He certainly has a point, but it certainly isn't completely one-sided. In science and technology: Marie Curie, Ada Lovelace, Hedy Lamarr (yes, that Hedy Lamarr, the movie star), Jocelyn Bell (now Bell-Burnell), Lise Meitner. (Very partial list!)

Science fiction: Well, ever hear of Mary Shelley? But also Ursula LeGuin, Anne McCaffrey, and many others.

Oh, and the "Western men invented everything" idea. Well, consider gunpowder. And Indian numerals, for that matter.

Nobody is special, we're all great. Count on Fletch for the supplicant orbiter beta display. Unique to Caucasians, so far as I know, and a trait completely alien to Asians.

Mr. Wilson, I salute you.

A trait completely alien to Asians, indeed.

Yeah, Fletch, and Merry Christmas to you, too. The Chinese invented gunpowder...and used it for fireworks. Western man got a hold of it and used it to transform not only warfare, but also mining and civil engineering. The Indians developed easily-manipulable numerals, advanced abstract mathematical concepts (e.g., the zero, negative numbers), an excellent trigonometry, and did make some practical use of them. It wasn't until the numerals were introduced to the West, however, that their full potential was realized. They were used to develop everything from accurate double-entry accounting systems, to statistics, to not one, but two calculus systems (Leibniz' system is less cumbersome than Newton's, although both work). So maybe Western man didn't invent everything, but we surely learned more than anyone else did about how these things could be used.

All those dayglow freaks
who used to paint their face
They've joined the human race
Some things will never change
Son, you were mistaken
You are obsolete
Look at all the white men on the street

james wilson - Sure. Enjoy your chest-beating.

Rob DeWitt - I took a look at the Nobel Prize list. There is at least one Japanese woman (inferior on at least two counts, apparently, according to you) who has a Nobel Prize in physics - hardest of hard sciences.

Although admittedly the Japanese since maybe the 1900s have been collecting some Western habits in this area. And doing damn well at it, too - did rather well against the Glorious USA (pause for fanfare), as I recall (largely due to the then arrogance and stupidity of the American military, at least initially) in the test of battle. And in industry, too.

Don't know about any of you, but I'd prefer a Toyota to GM iron any day of the week. Or a Sony stereo to the junk made in Britain, for that matter.

Nice projection, Fletch; hardly a surprise, considering the source. It's always fun to watch lefties conduct parallel conversations. Not illuminating, but fun.

The "trait completely alien to Asians" is the disparagement-of-their-own-race-game, which is so popular with little white boys, like......well, you, for instance. I know you're ashamed to be a white man, and for once we agree.

I'm ashamed that you're a white man too.

Fat Man said: "It seems to me that every liberal that whines that automobiles are evil should be banned from every benefit of cars and trucks. Let them grow their own food and make their own clothes. They would be too busy to whine"

That's why the older generation didn't complain. Too busy.

Me ashamed to be a white man? No. Slightly ashamed to be of the same ethnicity as bigots like you, yes.

White people (and within that group mainly men, but by no means all) have indeed been responsible for most of the advances in science and technology. Maybe the social advances, too.

But by no means all of them. And, just as an aside, the advances mentioned include machine guns, sarin, mustard gas, Zyklon B and nuclear weapons.

To get back to the theme of today - Merry Christmas to all men (and women) of goodwill. May we all try harder to be worthy of the sacrifice.

Back that truck up Maureen...women don't need sperm to reproduce? Did I miss some scientific breakthrough or is Her Dowdiness referring to Immaculate Conception?

Who, outside Blue/Elite enclaves, buys into such claptrap? Certainly not the tens of millions of women who spend billions annually to attract men.

Crazy old twat. Her mangina fumes kill all life forms it comes into contact with.
