Africa is very frustrating to me. They have all the manpower, space, and resources they need to be a leading world power. The only things holding them back are tribalism and a worldview that ignores ambition and achievement.

So if they don't want to be more than they are, I think we should stop trying to help them be more. If they're happy living in a mud hut eating grubs, well all right then. It means they starve sometimes or are swept with horrible diseases but apparently they like it that way because they won't do what it takes to avoid it.

Do they perform any better on any other continent?

If you believe that the goal of Bono, Gates & Clinton is to do good things and actually help Africans then you are correct they failed. However if their goal is to feel good about themselves and gain popularity with other people's money then they succeeded beyond their greatest imagination.
Soon you will see what Africans really believe when, much like Zimbabwe, South Africa goes through a mass genocidal civil war to rid themselves of any whites. Then Africans will have reached the epitome of their ability and will devolve into seperate tribes killing and raping other tribes while failing to grow enough food to support themselves. And after they kill as many whites as they can and kill each other in mass murders and orgies of death I predict that the UN will ask the white countries for money and food to save them from themselves. Wait! Was I talking about Detroit or South Africa?

Aid in Africa is negated by tribalism, corruption, and an incapacity to absorb large infusions of cash (leading to more corruption). This is a vicious cycle that has been going on for decades, and has led to some thoughtful Africans telling Western governments and NGOs to keep their checkbooks at home.

An attempted genocide of the whites may not go as smoothly in South Africa as its earlier version did in Zimbabwe. The whites in RSA number in the millions, rather than the thousands that lived in the former Rhodesia, and I'd bet many, if not most, of the Afrikaaners are still heavily armed. They and their ancestors have also been on the land in that part of Africa longer than many of their black adversaries, and with nowhere else to go, they might figure that going down fighting is their best option.

That is so true and one of the secrets of South Africa that the Liberals didn't want to talk about. Most of the blacks who now live in South Africa came from nieghboring countries when their own country blew up either from black on black warfare or from socialist civil wars. That is one of the things that made the old South Africa look so bad in the worlds view because they couldn't stop the illegal immigration and once there they couldn't afford to bring them all up to a standard of living that the world approved of. They also brought their tribalism with them and were the primary soruce of the violence in the black ghettos much of which the world choose to blame on the white government.

I don't intend to disregard the ability of Afrikaaners to defend themselves but they are outnumbered and when the government signals that they are willing to look the other way if blacks kill whites it will be genocide. It is just a matter of time. If I where a white person living in South Africa I would get dual citizenship somewhere and be ready with bags packed.

The very sad secret the left wants us all to ignore is that for most black South Africans, things have not gotten better after Apartheid. Its just gotten a lot worse for whites. In some ways, its even worse for everyone because the government cannot or will not control gangs/tribal groups terrorizing and stealing from the population.

Theroux has much experience in Africa. On my one visit there I saw the potential. As Christopher Taylor says, they could be a world power. Tribalism has made it impossible to develop honest governance. The governments are mostly kleptocracies or oligarchies with a smattering of outright dictators. Building a business is impossible for the average citizen in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, or any other so-called democratic countries. Once a business gets too profitable, the government kleptocrats and their henchman move in and take it away.

There are many smart and decent people there, but they are kept down by the thugs, of which there are many. It is a tragedy. Only invading, occupying, and setting up a system of private property backed by courts accompanied by reasonably honest representative government can change things. That's not going to happen unless the Chinese decide to do it. The West will just keep tossing money into the black hole in order to feel good about themselves.
