Freedom, with its current meaning at least, won't survive for future generations to ask unpleasant questions about. See 1984 for an example of how it happens and look at political correctness to see it in action in modern life.

Spirit crushing mediocrity will be the norm at that time. It would be like trying to describe a color that has never been seen before. Fortunately for them, it's all they will have ever known. It will be a hybrid dystopia characterized by the cloying pleasure-seeking described by Huxley, and Orwell's jack-booted Big Brother.

There will never be an acceptable excuse as to why preceding generations allowed this to happen. It will because Evil was ignored and it was so much easier to do nothing.
