Why Canned Cranberry Is — And Always Will Be — Better Than Fresh [Bumped]

Canned is what I grew up with, and canned is what my children will grow up with.
There is no joy quite like jiggling a perfectly intact cylinder of ribbed red gelatin onto a plate and then slicing it into individual rounds. (Mushed jelly, on the other hand, is for heathens. Totally defeats the purpose.) - -Foodbeast

And you haven't lived until you have a turkey, dressing, cranberry (the canned stuff) sammich on white bread with generous application of real mayo sprinkled with salt and pepper.

I read this essay and immediately bought six cans for the holidays. When I was a tot, my Old Man, who was a Chief Boiler Technician on the USS John W. Weeks (DD 701), used to take me to the Chiefs' Mess for lunch. The only bad part of the trip was that he would grab the scruff of my jacket and hold me out over the rail every time. He enjoyed that but I didn't.

Anyway, the Navy wasn't scruffy like it is now and the Chiefs' Mess was quite an affair, with tablecloths and everything. They would always give me a whole can of cranberry sauce and I would eat it all.

Now I'm old but I still intend to enjoy a couple of cans for Thanksgiving. Thanks for posting this and reminding me of it.

On the other hand, if you would like raw cranberry juice: buy two bags of cranberries, put into large pot with 5 cups of water, 6 cups if you want a weaker juice, boil, strain into another pot and press the berries into mush. You have your juice. Drink a cup of it while it's warm, refrigerate the rest. It'll really clean you out in a good way. If you can't take the bitterness, sweeten with a small amount of honey. You can freeze bags of cranberries for a long time, too. Oh, that's alright, you don't have to thank me. It was nothing.

Thanks anyway. I'm going to use that to recover from tomorrow.

Sorry, Bud; my wife's fresh-made cranberry sauce beats the hell out of anything you can get in a can. Of course, it takes a bit longer to prepare than the 30 seconds required to open a can and dump on a plate.

That's the way I like it, too. Especially the "shloop!" part. And Fair Winds and Following Seas to sTevo's dad, the Chief.

My kids fight over who gets to "shloop" the can. Family traditions are what they are.
