New Wine from Old Bottles: USAF planning to develop new means of nuclear deterrence

For legal reasons, USAF is unable to develop new nuclear warheads,
hence the old weapons (as B61-7, B61-11 and B83-1 gliding bombs) have to undergo refurbishment and maitenance, and the new weapons will have to use old type of warhead. The same thing applies to any new missile – it has to use a warhead based on old technology. The proposed new missile is called LRSO – Long Range Stand-Off. It is to replace the ALCM and ACM weapons that are currently the basic strategic weapon in the USAF arsenal. The Aviationist サ

Your Say

What crap..."legal reasons"...bah...exactly who is going to stop us? If it wasn't for the fact that the current government is riddled with progressives and communists, why in the world would anyone know what weapons were being built/designed in the US? I can just see some UN committee trying to "inspect" the US arsenal...yeah, right...seriously, what a complete farce.

I agree with you Brian in BC, why would we reduce our readiness for some second or third world approval. Who cares? But if appearances are important, then why not just put the new armaments inside the old containers and pretend. It is our safety and survival at stake so I subscribe to the idea "we don't need no stinking treaties." As Mel Brooks said. "its nice to be king."

Brian, by "current government" you mean the government that has been in charge for the past 50 years?

In California, you it's easier to get a permit to remodel than it is to tear down and rebuild. So you "remodel" a house by tearing down all but one wall and build the new house around it. Then you do it again to the remaining wall.

The B-52 is still flying because, well, there really isn't quite anything like it to do the job for the amount it takes to keep B-52's flying. Same with the C-130. Same with the DC-3. But while it looks like the same aircraft from the outside, inside is a very different story.

Sometimes you just get the answer to the question so right that all you need to do is update all around the edges that the casual observer does not notice.
