Thank these men for being in the forefront of the salvation of Western civilization from the Turks. The Knights of Malta, i.e., the Knights of St. John of the Hospital, or simply the Hospitallers, were always a thorn in the side of the Turks and other Muslims, first from their base Rhodes, then from Malta. Their heroic, outnumbered, but ultimately successful defense of Malta in 1565 set the stage for Lepanto six years later, and culminated with the even greater defense of Vienna in 1683, after the power of the Turks had been much reduced. But it was the Hospitallers, who, against all odds, held on to that dry, isolated rock in the middle of the Med to set the Turks on the path to defeat, from which the Ottoman Empire never really recovered. It would be fitting to consider the Knights' example today.
