[Bumped] Is America Forked? On the Other Hand, Maybe Not So Done

Chasmatic comments on Side-Lines: America: Fork. Stick. Done.:
This whole train of thought vibes: fear. People tend to forget that Americans are the most resourceful, resilient, capable citizens in still the smartest and strongest country on the planet.
We have been through tough times before - wars, depressions, civil and natural catastrophes. Maybe there will be violence and bloodshed (brother against brother comes to mind) and maybe some will starve or be packed off to gulags. So what? I don't know about you, folks, but I am a winner. I put my trust in God and do the best I can every day to look after me and mine. I am willing - and not afraid - to die for my beliefs.
There's a whole lot in life I don't worry about; I am pretty well centered in my own spirituality and the older I get I allow that there's probably about 23 different ways to get into Heaven. "Everybody's got their own way to butter their bread" as my father would say, "don't trust the priests, son, all they got a key to is the shithouse". And besides, as I get older, I pay more attention to the evidence and less to the arguments.
It's like being in Caligula's Rome. A half breed faggot of dubious provenance on the throne and toadying grifters running the place. You think I will let them get the better of me? When I see some of these folks running their game I want to say “Kid, I ran with bikers, shot junk, robbed banks; my hands have taken lives and saved lives; I worked with the Billy Graham Crusade; I got a million miles of highway under my ass, slept with dogs, danced with angels, I got screwdrivers older than you … what ya gonna show me, uh?”
But I don’t. Nowadays I just kinda watch it all going down. - - Posted by: chasmatic at October 30, 2013 7:21 PM

Your Say

Bingo.
Well did. And the "Screwdrivers older than you" morsel was worth the trip.

What politicians, rule makers, and pundits never realize is that People, especially American citizens will always figure out away around their rules. Example; Is their anyone in the US who couldn't buy some pot within a few days if they wanted to?

Well, I would like to join the commendatory chorus, truly I would. And while I admire your spirit, I humbly feel like repeating the old refrain, "When everyone around you is starting to panic, and you're not, then probably you don't understand the situation."

Despite Hollywood's best attempts to present Rome as something good and noble that finally went bad, it never was. From the beginning, Rome was founded for the benefit of the ruling class. Emperors came and went, but Rome's equivalent of America's political class - the security organs, the sub-imperial politicians and the professional civil service endured. That's who really ran Rome. And that is, with minor mods, who runs America now.

Roman plebeians were never free in any sense that America's Founders would have recognized. And for that matter, neither are we in 2013 America.

Perhaps you find self consolation in adopting what is essentially an Epicurean lifestyle and attitude. I want to myself, but when I think of the future of my children, well . . .

Quite so. Except that being a free citizen living in liberty means we should not have to do that. The more time we have to spend getting around the rules, the more enchained we become.

Being a winner doesn't mean the nation will survive this. We're done with the USA as we knew it. President Obama is succeeding in his task to fundamentally transform the nation, and there's nothing we can do about it.

The country that went through tough times in the past isn't the country we now live in any more. The great depression was faced by the children of pioneers, not children of ease and selfish hedonism. What we were able to weather through determined ambition and problem solving spirit of liberty in the past, we no longer have today.

Say ... that's not pejorative and condescending, is it? I have trouble parsing complex sentences.

"Prayers for our brothers and sisters in Christ..." That's easier. Thank you for including me.

"Say ... that's not pejorative and condescending, is it?"

Epicurus was a Greek philosopher who wrote that the public forum need not be of interest to the good life. The point of living was personal contentment and tending to one's own affairs was enough for that. Maximizing one's own pleasure and minimizing pain and discomfort was the life well lived.

"Prayers for our brothers and sisters in Christ..."

Yes, like these.

God be with you!

Here is one reason I say we have permanently lost our liberty.
