Because the left is a religious movement that engages an individual identity at the deepest levels,

there can never be a separation between the personal and the political.
Members of the faith know very well the implications of doubt: to leave the progressive faith is to invite expulsion from its utopia and the fellowship of its community, and forever after to be shunned as a person morally unfit for decent company. This is a daunting prospect that discourages challenges to its orthodoxy and keeps its adherents in line. This reality makes the narrative of one who departed its ranks not only a deeply personal document but also a political text. The Black Book of the American Left | Power Line

Your Say

Horowitz's comments on the left as a religious movement somewhat mirror Whittaker Chambers' comments on commies, proud members of the left, as put down in Witness.

"The Communist...will suffer almost any degree of injustice, stupidity and personal outrage from the party that he serves. He may fuss, whimper, harangue and even intrigue. But he will not act openly against the authority of the party. For to do so would be to breach discipline. And discipline is not only, to this great secular faith, what discipline is to an army. It is also what piety is to a church. To a Communist, a deliberate breach of discipline is an act of blasphemy..."

Here's the thing; the religion of the left is stronger than family, stronger than love. If a husband loses that leftist faith, then he's apostate and to be cast out; no bonds are greater than the leftist code. If you find out a friend you admire, respect, and love is not part of the cult, then they are cast out and you must shower hatred on their name even when they aren't part of the conversation. Your dearest, most loved brother or sister is condemned to bitter hatred if they leave the flock.

Because that way you keep people in line. That way nobody doubts or questions their ideas. Its terrifying and sickening.
