"There are three compelling reasons why we need to reexamine the role of government in the arts."

First and most importantly it is failing. Less and less people go to theater even though the federal dollars keep rolling in.
Second, these government dollars are not expanding the base of arts attendees, but rather subsidizing the entertainment of wealthy, white people. Thirdly, government dollars are not content neutral, a cultural ground game is being executed by the progressive Non Profit community to ensure that culture remains the sole preserve of leftist ideology. All very good points and absolutely true. The problem with federal funding of arts is that its not helping anything and is producing a lot of crap. In other words: its not doing what its intended to do and everyone in the arts should vehemently oppose it.

Chris, without the fed funding a lot of artists, and I use the term euphemistically, would still be bussing tables at an IHOP, and not very well at that.

First and foremost - it subsidizes that which those in a very rarified artistic community want - not something that is part of the broader culture. This results in 'Plaza Art' which can only be described as the remains of a pile-up on the interstate.

This also results with talentless people screaming loud enough to get money thrown at them so they shut-up (or scream the right phrases de jour) so that they are granted money to do...God alone knows what. Drugs? Heroin, if we're lucky? If we aren't lucky we get well-lit rooms with white walls and a great skylight so that a plaster vagina can be seen in its breathtaking plasterness.

clap. clap. clap. Hooray for you. You shocked the middle class. Who don't come here any way because they already know it will be just one long insult. And a boring insult at that - can't any of you 'artwits' develop the amount of clever a seventh grade locker room has? Anyhow, the middle class will pay to have you go away, for now.
