“Russia will arise from her age-old sleep, and our names will be inscribed on the wreckage of despotism.” -- Pushkin

Consider the traffic police officers in Dagestan, who, when Mr. Chertkov refused to pay a 3,000-ruble bribe (about $92), twisted his arms behind his back and made him breathe into a funnel they had fashioned out of paper towels. “The Breathalyzer shows that you have been drinking,” he was told. “The fine is 3,000 rubles.” Mr. Chertkov has begun to crave order, something he imagines existed under Stalin. Your Say

It is amazing to contemplate. A writer can actually live like our ancestors in places like this and the middle east. No need to imagine.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss... Try as you might, you did get fooled again.

The Russian black market people became the wealthy business man of the post communist era. Their mentality did not change, just how they exchanged their money.
The corrupt leaders are still corrupt. Those who were in charge then are in charge now.

When America finally falls the laugh I will get is how the people that thought everything would change when it did fall will end up in the same place and realize nothing changed except they became worse off.
