Come See Cal Worthington ... and His Dog Spot!

“I can beat or match any deal that guy out in the Valley can offer you,” boasted Worthington.
And then, gesturing to the ape: “What’s more, my dog can lick his dog!” His business tripled. By the eighties, he was spending up to half a million per month on advertising. “You’d think you could coast and not do them for a while,” he said, “but the next day after you don’t have a commercial on, business drops.” Paris Review – Death of a Salesman, Sam Sweet

Your Say

There have been to elderly figures who have been de facto uncles to essentially everyone in Los Angeles for decades, Vin Scully and Cal Worthington.

I bought my second car, a 1979 Jeep CJ5 from Cal just before being sent to Guam for USAF assignment. That car is what what attracted my wife of now 30 years. One time, although I don't remember, I was on Cal's Corral, a weekly live country music show in early 60's, sitting on stage in front of steel guitar player.
Recently I saw a commercial with Cal's son who is apparently carrying on the business. He mentioned that Cal flew bombers in WW2, and received Distinguished Flying Cross.

As to Vin, LA will experience serious heartbreak when he shuffles off, which can't be too much longer.

I grew up with both Vin and Cal.

I they helped define L.A. for many years.

If you're looking for a better set of wheels
I will stand upon my head to make a deal
I will stand upon my head
'Til my ears are turning red
Go see Cal!
Go see Cal!
Go see Cal!

I can still recite it from memory perhaps 35 years after I last heard it.
