“I don’t mind the food stamp program, but I DON’T THINK THEY SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO BUY JUNK FOOD!”

That’s a pretty odd place to draw your ethical line. That’s like if you came home one day to find a burglar in your bedroom stealing jewelry, and you proceeded to have this conversation:

“HEY! You can’t take that! That doesn’t belong to you! You’re going to just go pawn that for drugs, aren’t you?!”

“No, I was thinking of trading it for a treadmill.”

“Oh. OK. Well that’s healthy and constructive. Carry on, sir.” - -The Matt Walsh Blog

Your Say

Food stamps and every other social program should be a temporary means of assistance. They should not be allowed to purchase junk food.

The problem is they are multi-generational. I am surprised Michelle allows junk food. (no I am not)

Theoretically you can't buy crap with food stamps, but as long as its not prepared food (say, a burrito at the deli) its allowed, pretty much. That's always been really annoying to me.

Food stamps should only allow the purchase of specific sorts of stock foods like flour and beans, raw materials to make food with. Cheap food. Temporarily.

My mother remembers when she was a child the poor used to throw the government issued whole wheat flour in the river. Her family would collect it before it went over. They would use it and it saved buying it.
As a young adult I remember when food stamps were actual pieces of paper, I worked at a store and the people would come in and buy five cent candy, get 95 cents worth of change and do this until they had enough for beer or cigarettes. The cards prevent this action but introduce other problems.

I am not against food stamps to temporarily help someone in need. The abuse, the fraud and the life time of use bothers me.

Government is evil; food stamps will end the American experiment before Obamacare can finish the job. It makes no difference what items are allowed on food stamps. They can buy the meat and potatoes on food stamps and the beer, cigarettes and dope for cash, or the other way around. It's a stupid fucking argument.

How about no food stamps or snap. Our government pays farmers not to grow produce and supports other crops. Let the farmers produce and supply the overage to the needy. I say flour, meat, vegetables, rice, fruit, bread, peanut butter and jelly and after that you must work for what you want. (Of course elderly and disabled on a different plan.) Why is it fair when I who work go to the store and cannot afford prepared or junk food and must buy staples and cook, but those who do not work are allowed the things I cannot afford? Can someone explain it to me? Consider me dumbfounded.

I'm with Christopher. Though, I would not hand out stamps/cards that could be sold. You would have to visit the Guv'ment Food Center.

I saw a woman purchase $90+ worth of food then go over to the ATM and run the EBT through it and get $20 cash and go back and buy a case of cheap beer.

As a matter of fact, EBT cards can be used to buy postage at the United States Post Office.
