Hume: Tea Party pushed budget stand-off because GOP 'utterly failed' to restrain bloated gov't

Senator Cruz and his adherents do not view things in conventional terms.
They look back over the past half-century, including the supposedly golden era of Ronald Reagan, and see the uninterrupted forward march of the American left. Entitlement spending never stopped growing. The regulatory state continued to expand. The national debt grew and grew and finally in the Obama years, exploded. They see an American population becoming unrecognizable from the free and self-reliant people they thought they knew. And they see the Republican Party as having utterly failed to stop the drift toward an unfree nation supervised by an overweening and bloated bureaucracy. They are not interested in Republican policies that merely slow the growth of this leviathan. They want to stop it and reverse it. And they want to show their supporters they'll try anything to bring that about. And if some of those things turn out to be reckless and doomed, well so be it. - - Brit Hume | Fox News

Your Say

Well stated, Brit. 20 years ago, there were miniscule numbers who felt the same. The group is growing and willing to take some risks.

I heard this quote a couple of days ago, and it really resonates. The only political trajectory I will support with my vote is one toward a smaller, less intrusive Federal government. Bush/Rove style "compassionate conservatism" only exacerbated the drive toward centralized and authoritarian Federal control. A pox on both their houses! - but especially on our campaigner-in-chief, President Obama.

It's looking less and less like Cruz will be the man, but it's going to take a mover and shaker (pardon the archaic term) like him, but with charisma, to get the job done. Don't see any on the horizon.

He acts like an adult-if you have a goal, try something in its pursuit. If it doesn't work try something else. Keep trying until you succeed. The rest just want to keep their jobs. It's his goal that they hate, not his approach.

Cruz is toast. You can tell how much influence he has and what potential support he has by the intensity of the opposition to him. Even now the Dems and RINOs are digging up dirt on him.

Remember what happened to Palin? Same with Cruz: perceived as threat, neutralized, sent off to Coventry. They can squawk as much as they like, but effectively powerless.

Oh yeah, they will provide token rebellion and opposition, like hey us grass-roots people are being heard, but it's just blowin' in the wind.
