Your Say

Wow, that phrase was stolen from the libertarians.

"Join, or Die" said Benjamin Franklin.

Tea Party Principles enumerated:

1- Constitutionally Limited Government. Use the Constitution as a Guide to Limit the size and scope and burden of Government. Use Government to "secure the blessings of Liberty" for individual citizens. Govern only with the consent of the citizens from which all government power and authority originates.

2- Fiscal Responsibility. Government officials must act as caretakers and fiduciaries for the taxpayer's money and always spend it carefully. Elected officials must make the same tough decisions that citizens make every day with their family budgets and government budgets should always be balanced except in very extreme cases such as a declared war.

3- Free Markets: Private property ownership must be protected inviolate. Individual citizens should be able to buy, sell and exchange their private property with minimum government involvement. Business and Corporate welfare favoritism and subsidies should be eliminated.

Stolen from the libertarians--well, I'll take your word for it.

The Libertarians ought to give some thought to actually electing a Libertarian to Congress, Potsie. Until that happens, Taxed Enough Already types are your best bet. Until that happens, libertarians are going to be taken about as seriously as all the other sidewalk superintendents. Note that TEA is being taken as a real threat to both domestic enemies (Democrats, as if I need point that out) and the country-club Republicans. Libertarians ... no. No, they aren't being treated as a threat to the established order.

Which is a shame. I'd like to see what happens when one gets in. Even at the state or local level.

Libertarians as a group form the most confused political persuasion in existence. They should probably limit themselves to groups of a dozen like minded individuals and then they would't be so attractive a dumping ground for disaffected Republocrats.

As someone who has voted for various Big L Libertarian candidates over the years, I agree with what Mike James says. To be an effective political party one has to be involved in the messy, unprincipled world of politics. Libertarian principles are good. Does it matter that much if those principles are adopted under another moniker that can produce effective, electable candidates?

Republicans were not formed as and have never been a limited government party. They were more or less forced into the position by default as a result of the New Deal. At one point I think another word for Republican was reactionary. For the most part, with some notable exceptions, Republicans have been much more comfortable as social conservatives than as Tea Party libertarians.

"Leave Me the Hell Alone" sure does have a nice ring to it.
