Work

My day tends to be taken up with a lot of sitting. Lately I have taken to playing online poker for most of the day and it’s costing me a fortune, but it’s money well spent since it relieves the boredom.
My boss sits behind me in the corner of a rather large room from where he has the option of scanning all of his staff’s monitors. I have long since ceased to care that he can witness my online poker antics and live in hope that he will eventually pluck up the courage to fire me for it. I often look around at the other people in that room we all share and wonder whether they are actually ‘working’. Personally I have long since forgotten what it is that my own position actually entails, I lazily ponder whether the others there genuinely believe in what they’re doing or whether they are simply better at pretending than I am. Your Say

Some years ago my company hired temps to man the switchboard. One young lady impressed everyone with her manners and her level of skill. The company had a strict policy regarding phone and computer on personal business. The office closed at 5PM. One afternoon at about 10 to 5 the owner came out of his office and found the young lady playing one of the games on her computer. He very pleasantly told her she could leave now, went back in his office, called the HR manager and told her to get another temp, that we no longer required the services of the current one. That's how it's supposed to work.
