Novelist Elmore Leonard, 'Dickens of Detroit,' has died

Surrounded by family, Leonard died at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday at his Bloomfield Village home from complications of a stroke. Leonard was working hard on his 46th novel, “Blue Dreams,” at the time he was stricken. “He was pretty excited about it,” Peter Leonard said. “ He came over three times for dinner the week before the stroke, he was telling me about the story: how he had changed it, how he was going to bring the character Raylan Givens (from the Leonard-derived TV series “Justified”) into it. We would tell each other what we’d worked on that day. I will miss that, and him.” | The Detroit News

Your Say

Leonard's westerns are particularly good too. His last few novels were meh, but he has a terrific body of work and finally Hollywood figured his writing out and did his novels justice.

If you are interested in a terrific crime writer with great dialogue who also writes westerns, check out Loren Estleman. Seriously, you won't be sorry. The man can channel Dashiell Hammett and still is his own writer, and he's a genius with the language without being pretentious.
