"On Friday, July 12, during the KTVU Channel 2 Noon newscast, we misidentified the pilots in the Asiana Airlines crash. We made several mistakes when we received this information. First, we never read the names out loud, phonetically sounding them out. KTVU Apology for Friday Noon report

Your Say

Layers and layers of editors and fact checkers. Or is that idiotors?

The best part was that this happened on a local San Francisco television station.

Heads are exploding among the enlightened. L, as they say, OL.

I have worked at a TV station, someone gets the information, a reporter/news writer has to enter it, a producer and possible a news director have to approve it. At one time a graphic artist had to make the graphic but this has changed as stations have become automated. Some stations still have a separate graphics team other stations they enter it into the news computer and it gets placed in the graphics computer for the newscast. If the newscast isn't completely automated there is a director who has to hit a button on the switcher to put the graphic on the screen.
There are at least two people this has to go through, at least two but usually more people. Mistakes happen, but this went through several layers. From what I thought I read the names came from the NTSB. If that is true the TV station might have given very little thought to it.

My question is why would they have to release the names of the pilots? To quote Hillary "What difference would it make?" The pilots are not citizens of the United States, and knowing their names does not change a thing about what happened or will happen.

Sensationalism.

"My question is why would they have to release the names of the pilots?"

Because in the world of the politically-obsessed, nothing happened unless someone is blamed.

That's why.

I wonder if she considers herself to be a TeeVee journalist, or simply a news-reader. Either way, she most certainly was punk'd.

I still can't believe that this was from an actual broadcast.

If so, some heads must roll, I would think. The SF Bay Area has a large asian population, after all.

This is an interesting bit of the story. My guess: someone from the station contacted the NTSB via phone, and read and spelled the names. The NTSB staffer figured they were being punked and said "Yeah, sure. Them's the guys".

Wait a sec people...
Who cares how it happened and why should we care?

This is funny.

This is epically funny...

OK - I have been laughing at this for a day

But the more I think about it - the more I think that we are all being played.

After all, wasn't this just like a scene in the movie "Anchorman"?

Is it JUST A COINCIDENCE the the movie "Anchorman II" is in the works? Is it possible that this is all some sort of super hipster PR move/publicity stunt for an upcoming movie?

Ron Burgandy would not rest until he had an answer...

I know I'm very late to this party, but to Rob De Witt's point about this happening in the Bay Area's news market, I am having a schadenfreude boner over this.
And especially so, as KTVU is THE most liberal of the locals (KGO, KRON, KNBC), the most smug, obama fanboys and girls, leading almost EVERY newscast off with either a gay rights or race story...
This has to be eating them up so badly.
Sum Ting Wong!
Suck it, smug bastards.
