Amazon Secretly Removes “1984” From the Kindle Thousands of people last week discovered that Amazon had quietly removed electronic copies of George Orwell's 1984 from their Kindle e-book readers. In the process, Amazon revealed how easy censorship will be in the Kindle age. [ HT: He Who Controls The Present Controls The Past - Small Dead Animals]

Your Say

That news item is from 2009--a copyright violation.

Heh. Read the article. This was just the preamble.

Copyright or not, the fact remains: this is the drawback with digital copies. Its tough to burn even most of a copy of a book, but you can wipe out every single copy of a digital book with the click of a mouse button.

When the readers first started coming out I said that you wont have to burn books they will just be deleted.
Soon all your information will be stored "on the cloud" your home PC will not store data. They can delete all that as well.

I've avoided e-books since seeing an Amazon ad for Joseph Conrad's The N-word of the Narcissus.

Apparently, this articleinspired enough outrage for someone to go post on Amazon's Kindle board.

Enough about ebooks, though... does American Digest have any insight on who will win the presidency, Senator McCain or Senator Obama?

I have had a Kindle for 3 years and it is awesome. Luckily I bought mine AFTER the 1984 episode. You can backup your books and you can and should leave the wireless connection off until needed. You should also avoid system update until after others have done it and found no problems.

My internet use is 90% text based so the Kindle works very well. The battery life is measured in days and weeks, if you leave wireless off as much as possible. It's just fantastic to get a book you heard mentioned on the radio on the web in a few seconds.

I also installed a Firefox Instapaper add-on so when I find interesting magazine articles and blog posts I can just click on the Firefox 'marklet' while I'm surfing on my laptop. Then I can have Instapaper send me all articles I marked for read later as one book and it's delivered to my Kindle, anywhere I have cellphone signal, in a few seconds. I can text and email from my Kindle, not to mention read. I'm a hge fan of the device, did I mention there is no monthly bill to the cellphone company for any of this?

I prefer good ole' paper and hardcover/softcover for my copy of 1984, thank you very much.

I think it was Bruce Willis who recently discovered that his very large collection of iTunes music files (all purchased legally) would disappear with his death. Unlike CD's or vinyl which are material things in your possession, "intellectual property" be it music, books or video when you die, your rights to access die with you.

Serve warm with a slice of piecrust over top of the fruit.
You do need to take care when handling the raw meat and wash any surfaces touched by the raw chicken with hot, soapy water afterwards.
The final decision to use a roasting method to cook the chicken is a
good one because this type of cooking will allow us to compose the item in one
large single batch and place them on sheet pans for the oven.
