Comment of the Day: "I don't even care if anyone is reading or listening in."

"I know how it works, they have a system that flags specific words and phrases to be examined, then if it looks problematic, the entire call/email/whatever is analyzed. 99.99999% of the stuff goes through without even being noticed, and the stuff that is almost none of it gets to an analyst, I get it.

The problem is that they're doing it to begin with, and that problem is insanely increased by an executive branch which has so completely and repeatedly demonstrated they are willing to use their power to punish political enemies for no other reason than disagreeing with them.

I mean, its one thing to have government scanning emails for phrases like "kill the president," its another to have them looking for "small government" and "overtaxed." -- Christopher Taylor Comment on Side-Lines: Oh, really? Well, okay then

Your Say

And that’s the problem, most people don’t care if they listen/tap/bug/etc. our emails, phone lines, computers, etc.

Let’s go ALL the way back to circa 2005 techniques when we were merely surveying SUSPECTED FOREIGN TERRORISTS incoming phone calls to the US. Hell, I’ll throw in suspected domestic terrorists. like the two Douchebagisneski brothers from Boston via Shitholeistan.

How the fook do we walk this crap back? Do we? Can we? Is it over? We’re now ALL under constant surveillance? Like getting on a plane? We’re all suspected terrorists until proven otherwise.? And we have to like it or…get audited by the IRS. And he FBI comes a knocking? And all your skeletons in the closet get leaked and you’re essentially silenced till ya’ die.

Let me off this ride I’ve had e-fucking-nuff! Just kidding NSA, I love Obama, really I do.

The situation is hopeless, but not serious. People like to think of the Feds as some well oiled, efficient machine of repression, but the reality is far different. I was around the Feds for most of my working life. There are competent people here and there, but they are surrounded by affirmative action hires and people who are just there for the check. Lots of slick salesmen are constantly selling crap to people who aren't competent to determine the placement of a mailbox.

Just as a small example, I personally know of two Federal facilities which installed camera/card reader systems. Both were multimillion dollar systems. No money was budgeted for repair or maintenance, which would have had to have been done by outside contractors. Neither system was ever fully operational. One of them never worked at all, and was eventually replaced by a second, even more expensive system which is constantly offline.

Nobody got in trouble for any of this. A couple of the bureaucrats involved were promoted a step.

The military and the Federal police agencies are no different. I know some of the commentators on this blog think that the military walks on water, but no. Why would it be any different? It selects for exactly the same management types.

Yeah, the bureaucracy is the main problem - it stays even when the government changes, and runs things behind the scenes - but at the same time they're the same kind of losers and chumps you work with at any job. There's no grand conspiracy, no cabal of evil super geniuses, just a bunch of job climbing backstabbing guys who do as little work as possible to get that paycheck. Sure there are some genuinely bad actors in there, but its no different than any other job in that aspect.

While the TSA is giving prostate exams to passengers keep in mind the people that work at the airport (caterers, fuelers, contract baggage handlers, etc.) receive virtually no scrutiny and many of them drive company vehicles ranging from pick-up trucks to school buses onto the airport grounds and they need to do nothing more than show/swipe an ID card to bring with them anything they can put into their vehicle. This has been true since before the PanAm 103 bombing over Lockerbie Scotland. It's true today.

I have always held that our greatest protection against a coup was the fact that our military was made up of citizens. People who knew enough about the Constitution and unlawful orders to be unwilling to do the bidding of a potential dictator. Some of the things I'm hearing about our new, improved military are making me a bit wary. The big diversity push, the banning of religious expression, the PC worries about sexual assault, the lack of response to Benghazi (Why haven't we heard from General Ham?), etc. Too many of our top brass now seem to be perfumed prince politicians (As Col David Hackworth called them.) rather than warriors who know what an unlawful order is. That is beginning to worry me.

I agree about most of the bureaucracies. Most are much like the DMV. Only scary when they have a big stick to wave like taxes, fines, liens, licenses, etc.

This FISA program has to be dialed back by Congress with much tighter oversight. Since conservatives, libertarians and progs are up in arms about it, maybe that can actually be done.

Although... the bureaucracy was powerful in Nazi Germany and Maoist China, too. They can be horrific even through their sloth and incompetence.

Your little friend investor has been struggling to have a professional dollars director with no $10 trillion or more to get started. Yet imagine if they could possibly pool area their funds with different modest traders to arrive at this kind of lowest tolerance. So the common account was created to handle these kind of actual concerns.
