Of course he knew perfectly well that the Soviet ogre had uttered this word continuously from 1917 to 1989. Indeed, "progressive" has been exclusively a euphemism for "communist," on both sides of the Atlantic, since the mid-30s or so. And yet, his response would be: Stalin was not a true progressive, but a demon pretending to be a true progressive. In fact, this is the standard position of today's neo-communist on the USSR: fascist deviationism, not true communism. Did the experiment fail?
